International Literacy Association (ILA) Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #3 - ABCYa!
ABCYa! is an effective literacy website, where students can practice skills while playing computer games and doing activities. The website is free. However, parents and teachers can sign up for free accounts to monitor the progress of their child or students. Parents can sign up for a 6 month subscription of $44.99 for the Premium Family account, which gives parents complete mobile access, access to link up to 5 devices, ad free experience, ability to save favorite games, set a timer, control game category, and access to worksheets, activity pages and teacher resources. The Premium Teacher account gives teachers the same features, but up to 30 devices can be linked for an annual subscription of $69.99. ABCYa! ranges from Kindergarten to 6th grade. The games were carefully created and approved by certified educators and parents. They are aligned with the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. The games are categorized by grade and subject. They focus on ELA, Math and Science. There is a big variety of games to select from for all learning levels and styles. Additional resources are also available on the website. There are fun video activities for arts and crafts that students can do in the classroom or at home, printable coloring pages, a blog to read up on the latest games and activities and strategies for the classroom, and a store to purchase merchandise.
Overall, ABCYa! is a safe website for children to use. The games are educational and target specific skills. I like how the games are aligned with standards. Children do not realize that they are learning while they are having fun. In addition, it is a good way to introduce them to and have them practice their computer and keyboarding skills. The only issue I have with the website is that it does not provide additional support for children who are have difficulty with the game they select. Children would have to figure it out on their own if they do not know the skill or would select another game. Personally, I would use the free website as is without an account as an enrichment resource for children to practice. However, just keep in mind that users will only be able to play the games on a laptop or desktop computer and will not have access to the standard-aligned worksheets.
