ILA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #2

Instilling a love of reading in young children is key to their literacy success. KidLit TV (https://www.kidlit.tv) is an exceptional website that brings books to life and can help engage students by providing supplementary activities, appealing videos, and informative educational resources that all make reading fun! It also offers parents, teachers, and students an array of free online read-aloud videos, podcasts, crafts and activity ideas as well as drawing and writing tutorials that support learning enrichment and entertainment.

Just a little backstory, KidLit TV was formerly founded by Julie Gribble along with a diverse group of award-winning authors, illustrators, filmmakers, teachers, librarians, and parents. Sharing a huge passion for bringing children’s literature, Gribble and her team worked endlessly in creating this web-based platform with meaningful and engaging content to help young children grow a greater appreciation for reading. Their success has led KidLit TV in winning the Parents’ Choice Gold Award all while being selected as an American Association of School Librarians Best Digital Tool for Teaching and Learning.

Out of all the features, I found the shows on KidLit TV and the book trailers to be one of the best resources to explore the world of children’s literature. First, the KidLit TV shows are divided into three content sections, which are StoryMakers, Read Out Loud, and Ready Set Draw! The first section, StoryMakers, is an entertaining talk show that features bestselling KidLit authors and illustrators. It allows students to get an exclusive look on the making of a book and learn more about the details of a story. Children can then enjoy story time with authors at KidLit TV by checking out the episodes in the Read Out Loud section. The Read Out Loud series bring authors’ voices in the classroom where they read their own written books in the most captivating and enthusiastic ways. Animations are also included in their videos to capture and keep viewers’ attention. Lastly, Ready Set Draw is a great segment that allows featured illustrators to teach their audience how to draw characters or pictures from their stories.

The StoryMakers, Read Out Loud, and Ready Set Draw segments can all be integrated into a lesson. Prior to reading, teachers may showcase a video from StoryMakers for students to understand the author’s purpose for writing the book. Then proceed to the Read Out Loud section where students actively listen to the author personally read. The lesson can later be wrapped up with a fun drawing activity in the Ready Set Draw section. By integrating these features will surely enable students to engage in more authentic literacy experiences.

In addition, something new that I have discovered from this site is their book trailers. KidLit TV now features book trailers as an innovative and fun way to preview books. This itself can be used prior to reading where students make predictions, infer, ask and generate questions, and identify important story elements. In essence, KidLit TV continues to publish a multitude of engaging video content, picture books, sing-alongs, activities, and additional resources that help support the literacy and social-emotional wellness of children.
