ILA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #1 

    ReadWorks (https://www.readworks.org) is an excellent online website that contains a library of literacy content, curricular supports, and digital tools for K-12 teachers. It offers a multitude of leveled reading passages and detailed lesson plans that are supported by proven research and aligned with Common Core State Standards. Its goal is primarily centered on providing educators with quality literacy teaching tools to improve reading comprehension and help solve student achievement gaps.  

    What’s great about ReadWorks is that teachers can easily set up an account and instantly begin to search through the site’s wide range of free resources from both fiction and non-fiction texts to integrated tools and lesson plans at no cost. Reading passages can be filtered out or sorted based on keywords, content type, activity, grade or Lexile levels, topics, or by the specific skill or strategy that a teacher would like to focus on such as compare and contrast, plot, or cause and effect. Each passage selection is accompanied with question sets, audio narration, annotation tools, and a vocabulary activity. Its convenient features also give English Language Learners and struggling readers the necessary supports as they are allowed to listen to texts on their devices. 

    On top of that, teachers can create classes and engage students with differentiated instruction. Every lesson is accompanied by worksheets, graphic organizers, assessments, and other materials to facilitate student learning. Paired texts and assignments can be assigned for the whole class or individually as a way to differentiate. ReadWorks is not just a perfect tool for online learning, but a great platform that supports different classroom setups both on and offline by projecting lessons in front of the class, assigning assignments digitally, or printing out passages. In essence, ReadWorks is a wonderfully curated literacy website for teachers who are endlessly looking to increase students’ reading comprehension, foster differentiated learning, and provide extra supplemental support.

     Thank you, Dr. Rivera and to my classmates for making the learning experience in class enjoyable and worthwhile. I appreciate all the information shared online, email, and on text.  This class has made teaching with technology less daunting and challenging as we face a new level of technology-literate learners.  Even old dogs (like myself) are still able to learn new tricks.      Good luck to everyone as we continue to move forward with the Program. However, parents and teachers can sign up for free accounts to monitor the progress of their child or students. Parents can sign up for a 6 month subscription of $44.99 for the Premium Family account, which gives parents complete mobile access, access to link up to 5 devices, ad free experience, ability to save favorite games, set a timer, control game category, and access to worksheets, activity pages and teacher resources. The Premium Teacher account gives teachers the same features, but up to 30 devices can be linked for an annual subscription of $69.99. ABCYa! ranges from Kindergarten to 6th grade.
