IRA Newsletter Project Effective Literacy Websites #2: Quill

Quill.org boasts to teach and remediate grammar fundamentals with a focus on English language learners. It is designed to appeal to an older audience as it is devoid of bright colors, cute characters, point incentives, and accommodation badges.

The basic subscription is free and offers developed student paced lessons in bundles that can be assigned individually or to the whole class. Setting up your class is very easy as it is able to link directly to Google Classroom to import student rosters and post assignments and announcements. Students are given a class code and personalized instructions can be downloaded and printed to give each student.

Quill also provides detailed reports on student progress and daily activity. The only reports available with the free subscription are an activity summary, activity analysis, and diagnostics report. The activity summary allows you to review the activities that your students have completed and the level of proficiency that was demonstrated using color codes. The activity analysis allows you to view how the student answered each question as they are required to type their answers in complete sentences rather than simple multiple choice. The diagnostics reports provide data based on the diagnostic activities as well as a “personalized learning plan with recommended activities.”

Quill recommends initially assigning a placement test before assigning additional lesson packages. The pretest consists of twenty-one questions that assess foundational grammar such as capitalization, sentence structure, possessives, plurals, and combining sentences. There are options available for independent practice and whole group instruction. You can filter data using readability levels from second to eleventh grade as well as isolate activities and lessons by Common Core Standard. There are twenty-six grammar topics available and three concept areas: Science, Social Studies, and Culture.

Each lesson begins with a lesson overview of the grammar rule and an example. Students may not skip through the items. When an answer is submitted the students receive immediate feedback. If they get the answer wrong, the are asked to “try again” and provided with a prompt of how to use the grammar rule correctly as well as a “hint”.

Quill is comprehensive, organized, and tailored to older English language learners that may prefer to not be patronized by giggling animals and bonus stars. It provides a non threatening platform to practice grammar skills with support and immediate feedback. It is a no-fuss resource for teachers that provides focused lessons and instruction plans.
