ILA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #6

My sixth review on an effective literacy website is on Sumdog (http://www.sumdog.com).  Sumdog is a website that offers free educational games for students to practice their math and reading skills. Teachers can assign specific Common Core State Standards (CCSS) questions to students, which is a great tool use after teaching the class a specific skill. The games are interesting and motivating for children because of their graphics and different levels students need to complete. Data is quickly provided after each activity, and teachers can use this data to plan instruction. Reports include data to show breakdown of strengths and weaknesses in different skills.

After signing up for a free Sumdog account, the website guides you through a step-by-step process on how to create a class and add students. It was very simple to do and easy to follow. The only downside to this website is that the math option was free for users while the spelling and grammar option requires a subscription. Using the free trial, I was able to navigate through some of the literacy games that the site has to offer. A diagnostic quiz is given to determine the level of the games children should do. Once the assessment is completed, students are able to dive in the games available. The games allow children to practice key skills that are just right for their age and ability. The writing games involve writing sentences using specific words or writing words that end or begins with particular letters. Rewards and incentives are given to students based on correct answers and new skills mastered. This is something I know my students will look forward to!
