ILA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #7

My seventh and final review on an effective literacy website is on Room Recess (http://www.roomrecess.com).  Room Recess is a website that offers free educational games for students that are fun.  Their online games reinforce skills that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). An elementary school teacher who had the goal of reinforcing concepts in math, reading, spelling, language arts, and problem solving developed the site. Students can simply load up an activity without having to set up an account.  Everything on the website is free!

After browsing through some of the games the website has to offer, I focused my attention to on the different reading and ELA word games. Their reading games covers strategies including main idea, author’s purpose, cause and effect, fact and opinion, context clues, and drawing conclusions. These are all priority standards in my grade level and allowing my students to play these games, as part of our lesson will only boost their learning. To make it more challenging, the site will request students to try and complete the activities under a certain time. This is something my students will definitely take on and enjoy! In the site’s Language Arts and Spelling center, games provided are focused on improving grammar and English language skills. These include spelling, nouns, verbs, word forming, and punctuation. Other than the games, Room Recess also provides worksheets and eLearning videos that are lessons focused on different skills.
