ILA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #5

My fifth review on an effective literacy website is on Storynory (http://www.storynory.com).  Storynory is a website that provides over hundreds of free audio stories for children. There are several of topics to choose from including fairytales, myths, poems, music and history. The makers of the website looks for traditional stories from all over the world and recreate them with their own special characters. They provide audio stories that showcase imagination, good writing, and good narration. Most stories are geared towards elementary students; however, they do have some nursery stories and rhymes for preschool students. Storynory publishes new audio stories every week, which is also one of the reasons many educators use it as a resource.

Assigning Storynory’s audio stories is a great way to modify reading assignments. Personally, I feel that Storynory will be very beneficial for struggling readers and/or English language learners. The audio-assisted reading can help improve reading skills in fluency, pronunciation, and assist in acquiring new vocabulary.  Children can use the audio stories to develop attention and imagination as well as stimulate a love of words while listening. They can also improve sight word recognition and hear the tone or pace of a skillful reader. As students’ confidence or reading skills develop, they can read the same passage or text without the assistance of the audio recording from Storynory. This is a unique way to practice and/or assess for reading fluency as well!
