ILA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #6

Roy the Zebra (www.roythezebra.com) is a free online resource focused on enhancing the literacy skills of emerging readers of ages five to seven years.  The website provides a plethora of literacy-enhancing activities such as reading, spelling, and punctuation games, guided reading stories, lesson plans, printables, and songs. To access these wonderful materials, all one would need to do is sign up for an account.

The website's homepage is minimalistic, making it easy to navigate. You will find links to literacy games, interactive whiteboards, and other activities. Upon clicking on Games, you will find featured games and tabs that filter the games based on your focus – punctuation, reading, or spelling. Each game comes with printable resources like worksheets and graphic organizers, and a lesson plan. When you click on a game to play, you are met with a pop-up video that provides an overview of the game and a tutorial on how to play it. You can opt to close the video and read the directions if you wish. Most of the games are simple; for the spelling games, you listen to the word then you spell it by dragging and dropping the letters into the boxes.

One of the best features of the website – if not the best – is the Guided Reading Story. Upon entering the section, you will find nine chapters of the story, Tale of a Singing Zebra. Each chapter provides a before and after discussion as well as a reading certificate that can be edited for your child or student. It is a neat incentive for your young learners for engaging in literacy learning.

Overall, I think Roy the Zebra is an excellent tool for engaging your young learners. This website can also be a helpful tool for English Language Learners as the activities are simple. The reading activities incentivizes young learners with a reading certificate which can encourage them to read more. One of the best features of this website is that it is also optimized for tablet users so children can be engaged in learning activities wherever they may be.
