ILA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #7

DOGO News (https://www.dogonews.com) is a global literacy website that provides a huge collection of articles about current events. This platform seems to appeal to the upper elementary, middle, and high school grade levels. As I navigate through the website, I have found that DOGO News is mostly produced by kids for kids as means to provide news from a younger perspective. Current events, science, social studies, civics, the world, and environment are among the topics covered. Articles can be easily searched by category, word count, interest level, and grade level from K-12. Articles are also several paragraphs long and are supplemented by multiple strong visuals such as pictures, infographics, or videos. These add to the content by encouraging students to keep reading as well as comprehend what they have just read. When coming across unfamiliar words, there is an integrated dictionary as well as guided maps for geographical context.

Another feature that I found interesting is the audio feature. Both whole-class, small-group, or individual learning would benefit from this listening feature. Teachers can project an article on the board while it is being read aloud to the class. Each word is emphasized by being highlighted which is great for students to track the reading as the narrator speaks. Students can also listen individually, pausing or replaying if necessary. After listening, teachers can engage students in the writing process by having them conduct research and collaborating in small groups to produce their own current events article.

Overall, DOGO News is a great supplemental next-generation literacy platform that allows students to interact with digital material in an enjoyable, safe, and sociable way. Exposing young children to current events will not only inform them of the issues and events happening around the world but encourages them to read widely outside of their preferred genres, especially nonfiction texts. By incorporating current events into the classroom, teachers can better provide students with countless opportunities to explore diverse styles of writing, develop critical thinking, and extend their language and vocabulary capabilities.
