ILA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #4


Oxford Owl for Home (www.home.oxfordowl.co.uk) is a website created to support children’s learning at home and school. The website mainly caters to parents by providing information and strategies to help their children. While the website focuses on literacy skills, it also offers resources and strategies for math. 

Upon entering the homepage, you will find a feature that allows you to explore information, strategies, and resources for each age group. For example, the 3-4 age group will bring you articles about how their learning occurs and what skills they could develop. Some activities for this group include letter identification, phonics guidance, and retelling traditional stories. As you progress through the age groups, you will find relevant articles and appropriate activities for that age group. 

Oxford Owl for Home also provides information about literacy skills taught at each grade level. Clicking on each grade level will provide articles to read, recommended books, and activities used for each grade level. This feature is helpful for educators of these age groups. 

The website also includes a free eBook library where parents and teachers can find books to use while developing their children’s reading skills. You may browse eBooks based on age, series, or Oxford Level. If you are interested in browsing for other books, the website also includes a Bookshop to purchase books. The page will show you featured books of the month that will sell at a discounted price. 

Oxford Owl for Home is an incredible website that provides excellent resources and activities to parents and educators for educating children. With this website, parents can be more informed about how learning occurs at the early stages of development and supplement their children’s education at home.

     Thank you, Dr. Rivera and to my classmates for making the learning experience in class enjoyable and worthwhile. I appreciate all the information shared online, email, and on text.  This class has made teaching with technology less daunting and challenging as we face a new level of technology-literate learners.  Even old dogs (like myself) are still able to learn new tricks.      Good luck to everyone as we continue to move forward with the Program. However, parents and teachers can sign up for free accounts to monitor the progress of their child or students. Parents can sign up for a 6 month subscription of $44.99 for the Premium Family account, which gives parents complete mobile access, access to link up to 5 devices, ad free experience, ability to save favorite games, set a timer, control game category, and access to worksheets, activity pages and teacher resources.
