International Literacy Association (ILA) Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #1 - Reading Bear
Reading Bear is an effective literacy website that will enhance children’s reading and comprehension skills. This free online reading program will teach children the basic foundations of reading and phonics principles step-by-step. The resources and tools were carefully designed and selected to teach children beginning to learn how to read. The program targets children between the age of 4 to 7 years old. However, I believe children between Kinder to 5th grade can benefit from the program as it will strengthen their literacy skills.
The program is very flexible. Users have the options of following the program from the beginning with learning how to identify letter names and sounds or selecting a specific presentation to focus on a child’s needs. Children can easily practice and follow along with the presentations. The presentations will show children how to blend sounds properly and learn how to use those skills to read words. After each skill or topic presentation, the child can take the quiz and complete the worksheets to check their understanding or use the flashcards for additional review on the skill. Checklists and guidelines are available for download so the child can have a plan to follow.
Overall, Reading Bear is good for individual use, whole-classroom use, intervention and ESL. Parents and teachers can access the resources without an account. However, teachers are able to create student accounts under one email address to track the progress of each student. Teachers can use the program in their classroom. There is a Teacher Guide file that has additional information about the program and strategies on how to further support students.
