International Literacy Association (ILA) Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #6 - MagicBlox!
MagicBlox has a wide variety of children’s books to select from. The website is easy to navigate and can be arranged by reading level, category, A to Z, media, title, listing date, and language as well. The languages offered are English, French, German, Mongolian, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, which I thought was neat. Some websites rarely offer books in other languages than English and Spanish. Furthemore, many of the books from this website are self-published. The books come from publishers and authors from around the world. They are approved for the age group prior to being released on the website, which makes it safer for children to browse through. It is nice to take a break from famous books and well-known authors, and give other books a chance. However, there are some books by small well-known publishers as well. Each book has a rating scale from 1 star to 5 stars. Children are able to see what books other children really enjoyed reading and may want to read that book as well. Children have a lot of options to choose from and will definitely find a book they will want to read.
A feature I found interesting on the website is that children are able to publish their own books they wrote and make an earning from it. First, MagicBlox sells recurring subscriptions to parents and schools. Second, the revenue is split. MagicBlox divides the money evenly between them and the creator community. 50% goes to MagicBlox and 50% goes to the book owners. Finally, MagicBlox will pay the book owners. They will distribute the creator revenue to each book based on the reading performance. For example, if Book 1 has 25% of reads, the owner will earn 25% of revenue and if Book 2 has 40% of reads, the owner will earn 40% of revenue. I think this is good way to
Overall, I would suggest this website as a good literacy website for children if users are willing to purchase an Access Pass. Initially, I thought the website offered a completely free online library for children, which was why I was interested in it. However, the website will only allow you to browse through their library and show you a preview of the books from their collection. If you are interested and would like to explore more books, you would have to simply register for a free account. I believe if you register just for the free account, you are able to receive one free book every month. If you would like to continue reading a particular book, you would have to purchase an Access Pass. Users need an Access Pass to be able to read the books in their library. On their website, they have three kinds of Access Passes. The Book Work Access Pass will give users unlimited access to all the books on MagicBlox for $4.99 a month. The Butterfly Access Pass will give users unlimited access to all the books for $48.00 a year. The Owl Access Pass, which is for school and library use, will give users unlimited classroom access to all books for an annual membership of $99.00. If you are considering or undecided about purchasing an Access Pass, users can sign up for a 14-day free trial. The free trial gives users unlimited access to the library within that time frame to see if this website is something they would want to use.
