International Literacy Association (ILA) Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #2 - Into the Book
Into the Book is an effective literacy website that will enhance children’s reading comprehension skills. The website was designed for elementary students and teachers to use. It focuses on 8 research-based learning strategies: Using Prior Knowledge, Making Connections, Questioning, Visualizing, Inferring, Summarizing, Evaluation and Synthesizing. Users can do the interactive activities or engage in the 15 minutes video programs.
For the student website, it features interactive reading comprehension activities for all the strategies. Students have the option of viewing the website in English or Spanish, which is good for E.L.L. learners. Once students are on the website, they can simply create a login using their name to receive a key passcode, which they can be inputted the every time they are on the site to return to where they left off, or they can simply start new every time and click the skip login button. To begin, students will select a reading strategy they want to work on. I like how each strategy has a description of what it will focus on and provides several examples of how to perform the strategy so students have an idea. For example, the visualizing strategy will create a movie in your mind while reading and the synthesizing strategy will put the pieces together to see them in a new way. First, students will watch the video of the strategy in action in a real classroom setting. Then, they will try the strategy themselves with the interactive activity. For each strategy and activity a Teacher Guide is available as well to demonstrate how teachers can utilize the online activities with their students and provide further support. For the teacher website, it features reading resources with lesson plans, teacher guides, video clips, posters, book lists and songs, as well as academic standards to align the activities with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
Overall, Into the Book is a good resource because the project was created by experienced teachers for teachers. The lessons are relevant to student learning objectives. They are easy and fast to use. The interactive videos and activities will keep students motivated and engaged throughout the lessons.
