International Literacy Association (ILA) Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #4 - Storyline Online
Storyline Online is an effective literacy website that will enhance children’s reading and comprehension skills, as well as their writing and communication skills. The website’s suggested target are children from Kinder to 4th grade. As a children literacy program by the non-profit Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) Foundation, the website is completely free and free of ads. The foundation solely relies on donations, grants and gifts in order to produce their content. The talented actors and animations make the stories come alive. Children will surely stay interested and engaged throughout these videos. In addition, each video comes with a parent and teacher guide with a simple curriculum that was created by elementary educators. There is information on what to do pre-reading, during reading and after reading, as well as activities aligned with the Common Core State Standards that focus on reading and writing.
The website is easy to navigate. Once you are on Storyline Online, you will see the featured books of the month, books that were just added and an option to view all books. There is also a drop menu to explain the purpose of the children literacy program and awards the website had received throughout the years. Moreover, when you view the library, the books are arranged by alphabetical order. Each book will tell you the author, illustrator, publisher, who it is ready by, suggested grade levels and the run time of the video, which is usually 5-15 minutes. I thought it would be nice if users were able to filter the books by grade levels, which I tried to figure out on the website. On the Frequently Asked Questions page, they recommended typing the grade level on the search bar, which did work, but I would like it to be more obvious for those who do not read the FAQ page. Overall, the website is a good resource and I would recommend for parents and teachers to give it a try with their children and students.
