International Literacy Association (ILA) Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #7 - Oxford Owl for Home
Oxford Owl has two websites: Oxford Owl for School, where users can find teaching resources and expert school improvement support, and Oxford Owl for Home, where users can find free resources to support learning at home. For this review, I will focus on Oxford Owl for Home. Oxford Owl for Home provides advice and support for parents, educational activities and games, and free eBook library for children 3 to 11 years old.
On the Oxford Owl for Home website, there will be different drop menus to explore. There are drop menus for Reading, English and Math that are arranged by topic age and year group, which is very convenient for navigating through specific skills children need to focus on. There is a drop menu for At School that is arranged by milestones, school year and homework help. The sections give parents and teachers an idea of what to expect from their children and students at different stages in their life and offer helpful tips. There is a drop menu for Kids’ Activities that is arranged by activity type, everyday ideas and activities by age. I like this section. There are tips, worksheets and videos for children to look through and practice their skills in creative writing, phonics, grammar, and other subject areas. The last two drop menus are for the bookshop and blog. Some of the books in the shop are accompanied with free activities so be on the lookout for those. There are also free eBooks available for download. However, you will need to create a free account to read those books.
Overall, I think Oxford Owl is an effective literacy website that will enhance students’ literacy skills. The website is visually appealing and easy to navigate. It offers comprehensive reading help and activities for parents and teachers. A lot of foundational skills and early concepts are covered in the subject areas, which I like. In addition, there are games children can play that are kid-friendly and appropriate. I think this website is good for additional practice and enrichment resources for at home or at school use.
