International Literacy Association (ILA) Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #5 - Poetry4Kids
Poetry4Kids is an effective literacy website that will enhance children’s skills in reading and writing. Poetry has many benefits for children and people of all ages. Reading poetry allows people to connect and find meaning in their experiences. For younger ages, poetry helps build early literacy skills as poems emphasize rhyme, rhythm and sound. Poetry helps develop brain power and memory, especially through nursery rhymes and songs. For older ages, poetry gives children and adults an outlet to express their thoughts, ideas and feelings. In addition, poetry is fun and funny. Writing and reading poetry is an enjoyable experience that everyone should try.
When you are on the website, you will see the home page with a picture of Kenn Nesbitt, who is the children's poet and creator of the website Poetry4Kids. Nesbitt intended for the website to be a funny poetry playground for children. The website offers many features. Aside from the funny and classic collection of poems by the child author, the website offers games, poetry lessons, activities, videos, and a rhyming dictionary. I read through some of the poems and played the games. The poems and games are kid-friendly and definitely funny. There is a feature where you can play the audio on some of the poems and Nesbitt will read the poem. In addition, the poem lessons and activities have some good ideas that parents can try at home or teachers can try in the classroom to enhance their experiences with the poems.
Overall, I think the website is fun. You can really see the author’s personality through his work and website. I like how he interacts with the children who visit Poetry4Kids. Children can say “hi” on an email and he tries his best to reply back. Of course, children should always have adult supervision when messaging a stranger even if he is a children’s author. In addition, Nesbitt does school visits if that is something teachers are interested in.
