Effective Literacy Website #4

ABCmouse (https://www.abcmouse.com) is an online curriculum that teaches letters, sounds, counting, art, science, music, and phonics. It first launched in November 2010 and is produced by the company, Age of Learning, Inc. Their headquarters is based in Glendale, California. This excellent platform is known as the award-winning early learning academy for young kids specifically ages 2-8 and also the most downloaded kids’ program on iOS and Android in 2020. Users get a free month trial to preview the curriculum. The website is 100% safe and very kid-friendly while the lessons and activities are displayed in a virtual classroom setting, making it simple to navigate. It has no pop-ups or links to other websites, so it prevents access to potentially harmful content.

The program is designed with more than 850 lessons in ten levels. As a child completes each lesson, he or she is guided to the next one and can earn tickets as an incentive. This acts as motivation for learning. The subjects that this program offers are Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Art. The activities include animations for children to watch, games to play, books to read, a collection of songs, puzzles, art, and printables. With that, ABCmouse appeals to a large array of learning styles. What’s really beneficial about this program is it also provides a progress tracker where the number of completed activities is recorded. Children can also create their own avatar to represent him or herself while learning on ABCmouse. Avatar features and clothing can be purchased with tickets earned. ABCmouse also provides interactive virtual fieldtrips to the zoo, aquarium, and farm. The possibilities are endless and I can now see why this program is very popular!

This is something I would definitely use in my classroom, and my students can use ABCmouse when we have computer time at the end of the day. Even though it is not entirely free for us to use, I am grateful that they provide a full month for free.
