Whooo’s Reading?

Whooo’s Reading (https://www.whooosreading.org) is a reading website that is designed to aid students in thinking critically about what they read. Students keep track of the books they're reading and then respond to open-ended questions, write reviews, and answer reading comprehension questions. Students can type or speak their comments, which is a useful option for students with limited typing skills or learning disabilities. This platform includes an automatic grading system that assesses student responses for length and complexity, as well as the ability for teachers to assess and provide feedback on students' responses. There’s a class shelf on the website where students can see what others are reading and can receive recommendations for new books to read. Using an incentive to motivate reading, students receive coins for completing activities, which they may use to design their avatar in the app.

To get started, teachers can create an account and a class roster, which then they can construct teacher-created open-ended questions for the students, The teacher dashboard provides basic information about student reading and responses while the premium memberships provide further reporting and customization options. There's a free version, as well as a silver package either through an annual pricing or semester pricing for teachers. I believe that this is an excellent tool that supports reading comprehension and writing development. For the younger students, this tool encourages them to read more and to thoughtfully reflect on what they read. What really stands out for me about Whooo’s Reading is that it further expands their ideas by focusing on open-ended questions rather than answering basic multiple-choice questions. Just like what the website claims, “accelerated reading comprehension and writing skills has never been easier or more authentic.”
