Exploring Literary Websites #6: fluencyandfitness.com
Heidi Cameron
As
an active teacher battling her own tendency to get bored in class with the same
old strategies, I was excited when I found the site www.fluencyandfitness.com. The name
describes perfectly what it is. On this site you can expect to find resources
that pair fluency skills with fitness activities.
The focus of this
site is on reading fluency, math fact fluency, and phonics. As we all know
drill practice takes the fun out of learning and it does not work for all
learning. The videos and resources on this site are intended to activate
multiple areas of the learners’ brain all at once. Students are performing fact
recall while hearing, seeing, saying, and moving. Research as shown us that
learning is most meaningful when it is accessed in multiple ways. The resources
also include worksheets, posters, and flash cards that can be used in tandem
with the videos and now the students are writing too! Students are motivated to
learn and are provided the opportunity to burn off some of that extra energy
that bubbles out of them all day.
Teaching online? The
videos and task cards can be assigned on common CMS platforms via URL. Fluencyandfitness.com
allows you to upload a student list and provides a student code or ID so that
you can collect data on student performance as well.
This is a
subscription site that is curated by an educator for educators. The creator
offers three subscriptions choices: Monthly for $15.00, Quarterly for $39.00,
and yearly for $125.00. There is an option to try it for one week for just one
dollar. I was unable to get more information about the creator and wish that
there was a more personal touch. She does appear in her videos, however. Some
older content from this creator is available on teacherspayteachers.com but you
must purchase each activity, video, or resources individually. Although I am
always on the hunt for a bargain and anything free this is subscription that I
will be looking in to.
